Harmony
In this painting, titled After School Time, is one example of Xuan Khanh Nguyen’s characteristic depiction of Vietnamese schoolgirls underneath vibrant trees. The radiant yellow of the leaves emits a carefree exuberance. The way Nguyen seems to have dabbed on the brightest yellow to emphasize the thickness of the paint makes the leaves quite literally pop out at the viewer, in contrast with the flat and darkened figures loitering in the shadows with their bicycles. Together, these multitudes of yellow create what Vietnamese poets have traditionally called “ánh vàng rực rỡ”—a resplendent golden glow. This visual phenomenon is particularly treasured in Vietnamese aesthetics because it simultaneously represents wealth, spiritual richness, and the ephemeral nature of all material beauty.
By depicting such abundance of yellow, the artist invites viewers to immerse themselves in a moment of perfect natural opulence that bursts forth like a visual fanfare, demanding attention and celebration. Their abundance suggests not scarcity but generosity—nature’s extravagant gift, freely given. Beyond its aesthetic beauty, this artwork speaks to Vietnamese philosophical traditions that emphasize harmony with natural cycles. The golden leaves aren’t merely falling; they’re participating in the eternal rhythm of growth, maturity, release, and renewal. There’s no sense of melancholy in this autumn scene—rather, there’s a celebration of transition and transformation inspired by the changing of seasons.

I think it’s cool how the leaves are bright and colorful, overlapping the monochrome schoolgirls. It’s like nature is the color in their lives, and is in some ways more significant than out human problems.
