Sally Mann’s “Candy Cigarette”
Photographer Sally Mann focuses primarily on human subjects – oftentimes her own children and family members – and utilizes both posed and candid scenes in order to portray the range of subtleties in human expression and behavior: from the carnal to the playful, the dismal to the joyous. Taken in 1989, the featured photograph captures a young girl in a white dress standing confidently in the foreground, cigarette held aloft in a gesture that feels jarringly adult. We are confronted with a powerful juxtaposition: innocence and rebellion, youth and premature worldliness.
The photograph’s composition is masterful in its simplicity. The stark contrast between the white dress and the dark background creates a visual anchor, drawing our eyes immediately to the main subject. The girl’s expression is not one of childish mischief but rather a serious, almost defiant gaze that challenges the viewer. Even though the title of the piece makes it clear that the cigarette she is holding is simply a candy imitation, the ease and familiarity with which she mimics this adult behavior is nevertheless jarring. Her crossed arms and flat gaze convey defiance, and her eyes carry a weariness that is beyond her years; she exudes the sensuality and worldliness of the woman she has yet to become.
While her siblings seem content to remain within the realm of childhood, blissfully unaware of an outside world, Jessie turns in the opposite direction and boldly meets the eyes that observe her – as if she is the one evaluating the camera rather than the other way around. We all remember moments of trying on adult behaviors—sometimes rebelliously, sometimes out of curiosity—while our understanding of those behaviors remained incomplete. In its stark black and white clarity, this photograph reminds us that growing up has always been complicated—a journey marked by contradictions, experimentation, and moments where innocence and experience collide in ways both beautiful and unsettling.

Sally Mann’s “Candy Cigarette” captures what appears to be three children playing outside. However, the only one aware of the camera is the blonde girl in the white dress. The black and white photo captures the sombre and grim atmosphere of the girl’s emotions. Her blonde hair and white dress representing innocence and youth are juxtaposed with the candy cigarette and tired look in her eyes. Mann expertly captures the struggle of innocence and adulthood in this powerful and beautiful photo.

This shot is to say the least , insightful and sobering . Smoking at an early age seems to almost instantly change a child’s personna and mentality . A stronger urge to explore grown up things sooner rather than later. Great Photograph. Powerful .

First off I would like to say terrific blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind.
I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your head prior to
writing. I’ve had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out
there. I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to
15 minutes are usually lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips?
